Volunteers - they make the world go 'round

Volunteers - they make the world go 'round

Saturday fencing today was a truly wonderful experience. And not just because off all the happy younger fencers, and not just because of I got to fence against a member of the current Australian Olympic Team at the club today. No, the best thing about Saturday fencing this time was the extraordinary generosity of the MFC community. Today two different parents walked up to me and asked if they could contribute to the club in two very different and interesting ways.

Think about that. It's Saturday morning, the kids are off having fun and there's nothing these parents have to do. They're busy and probably tired - aren't we all? And yet rather than walk across to the excellent cafes in Lawson they think to themselves 'hey, maybe I can help'. Seriously, Wow!

And yet, perhaps I ought to expect this. Maybe there's just something about MFC that brings out this generosity in people. After all, every single person you see around the place doing something or other (and a whole bunch of stuff behind the scenes you never see) is a volunteer. And while that's just the way we do things, every time I stop and think it really does strike me as rather extraordinary.

I had that 'wow, these people are amazing' moment this morning. May there be many more mornings like this.
