2021 Richard Emmerick Shield – Round 2

Stacked images (two rows of three images): top row from left: a group shot of four fencers with medals around their necks standing beside the club’s Pharaoh (yep, you heard right), then a portrait of two sabre fencers (one young, one with grey curly hair) facing camera with beaming smiled, then a shot of the room with two pistes of fencers fencing (sabre on the left piste, epee on the right). Second row from left: two fencers sit on chair relaxing between bouts, one fencer stands behind these two, they all look happy because fencing is the coolest sport! In the middle two cool dudes, one on either side of the regal club banner, shot from below to make them look hell tough. Finally, four fencers with medals around their necks looking super happy and yep, one of them is wearing a cape! Toldya fencing is cool!

Another amazing day at MFC, full of fun, camaraderie, fencing, medals, cheers and joy. 40 fencers creating 63 entrants across 14 events, from under-14 to veteran in all three weapons.

From my vantage point on the DT desk a number of things jumped out at me, most obviously the quality of our fencing. There were excellent performances across the board, often from fencers who really haven't been fencing very long – a testament both to the dedication of our fencers and the skill of our coaches. Together, we're making brilliant progress – go team!

Not that the brilliance stops there! Seeing fencerso who haven't previously refereed in competitions volunteering to help this time was fantastic, as was the number of members (parents included) who turned up early to help set up. There was a real sense of togetherness in the room with athletes of all ages contributing to the collective achievement that is MFC, often in ways that were new to them.

With all that help, and with a room bursting with goodwill and collegiality we achieved something astonishing – we put together a fencing competition that was fun, relaxed and orderly all at the same time! We even finished early (an MFC first!).

Finally, to top that all off, together we raised $100 for armoury supplies – much needed to keep all the club gear in working order. Huzzah!

Thank you everyone who was there and contributed to such an excellent day in ways both large and small.

Full competition results are available on the MFC website, as are the updated points tallies for The Grex teams.
